Bode's Galaxy & Cigar Galaxy
View full resolution ↗
A famous interacting pair in Ursa Major, roughly 12 million light-years away. M81 (Bode’s Galaxy) is a grand-design spiral with tightly wound arms, while M82 (the Cigar Galaxy) is a starburst galaxy being reshaped by the gravitational interaction — its core is erupting with superheated hydrogen plumes visible as red filaments in H-alpha. With enough integration time, a faint tidal bridge of stars becomes visible between the two.
